How To Build The Ideal Man's Wardrobe

Sep 13th, 2011 Greg Savoie

Your wardrobe should always be up to the occasion. This might however require a little spending and more energy to make it so. But you don't always have to start big. You can always add more with time.

The Suit

There always comes a time for a suit no matter how casual your style is.One of the most common ones is the two-button black suit. You should always get measured when you are getting a new suit to know your most accurate dimensions at the time. A good salesperson will know what features in a suit will best suit your features.

Dress Clothes

Get an undershirt. They usually hide any perspiration and prevent it from reaching the dress clothes. You should measure yourself for a white dress shirt. Add a solid colored neck tie, black dress socks and dress shoes and you're almost there.

Belts

Every man should have a black belt somewhere. You can also get a a reversible dress belt that can change between black and brown. In case you have a dress watch that has a metal band you can go for a dress belt with a buckle that matches (silver or gold). For your less formal pants and jeans you can choose a casual belt. These are usually wider and less shiny. A properly fitting belt should be comfortable when set to the middle notch.

Business Casual

Having khaki chinos is a great idea. It can be dressed up with a dress shirt, tie, and blazer, or dressed down with a polo shirt. In case you want a blazer, you can try a blue blazer with brass buttons paired with khakis.Wear dress socks that match your pants.

Jeans

Dark jeans usually last very long. It might be a great idea if you own only a pair of jeans. Large, short and excessively distressed jeans are a no-no. Good jeans will go well with matching casual socks and a casual belt. T-shirts are usually the best match for jeans.

Outerwear

Pea-coats and trench coats should be matched with suits and non-casual dressing. For your casual clothing try hoodies and sweatshirts. Sweaters are great for layering and can be worn over a dress shirt under a suit coat or blazer, or over a sport shirt with a pair of jeans.

Extending the Wardrobe

It is obvious that the kind of clothing that you wear most should make the biggest part of your wardrobe. For example if you wear suits every day you should have several of different colors and styles.Try to match and balance what the people around you wear but still stick to your own style and let it bring out your individuality.

Unless you have really deep pockets, you don't have to buy everything you need at once. Make use of what you have and get of what you wear most frequently.

Finally, consider that while the clothes may make the man, style is about more than just clothing. Proper grooming completes a good look, but even that isn't everything. You should as good looking on the inside as you are on the outside.
